The Tripartite of Leadership: Part 2 Critical Leadership Competencies & Leadership Skills by SAMUEL DANAUTA KYARSHIK
Critical Leadership Competencies & Leadership Skills
What Makes a Successful Leader?
There is no doubt if you read my last post about the above topic, you would have known and agree with me that, leadership is in three dimensions. So just as we have God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, we have Man the spirit, Man with a soul and lives in a body, that’s also a trinity. The tripartite nature of leadership is namely; the Leader, the Position & the Skills. This is what I call the triple alliance of leadership. And like I said in the last post I will say again that there cannot be a functional leader without these basic interactions. There will always be a position to be occupied by a man who is usually called the leader. There must be a leader who must occupy a vacant leadership position and the third thing is that the leader must come with certain leadership skills to function very effectively in that position. So let’s talk about these skills.
Before anything call skills there are four qualities you look out in a man and if he hasn’t these qualities then forget it when it comes to leadership. These qualities I call the 4Cs namely;
Character, Capacity, Competence, and Courage. The leader must be a man or woman of good character. He or she must have the capacity to solve the problems of the people. He or she must have competence and Courage to act when they need to, without these four Cs, leadership has not begun.
So again, the question has been asked, what makes a successful leader? The answer is in the critical leadership competencies and skills the leader is supposed to come into the position of leadership with7 people and the land.
2. The leader’s ability to inspire others to high performance. In a must shell, it has been said that if your action inspires people around you to do more, act more, and think more then you are a leader. The leaders must be a motivational leader beyond a motivational speaker.
3. The leader’s ability to properly communicate to his people and his inner power to listen intensively to their challenges is paramount. There is a difference between hearing and listening.
4.The leader must be able to demonstrate team spirit. It is otherwise known as a collaborative orientation. In its simple understanding, it is the leader’s ability to work with people from different backgrounds and understanding to achieve a common goal.
5. The leader must possess the understanding and wisdom to know that the future is for the younger generation and he or she needs to develop future leaders. This we don’t see in our nation where leaders see themselves as the only solution to the problem until they die on the seat of power. The good leader will always work to develop the people around him in a bid to raise them to take responsibility while he is alive not when he or she is dead.
6. The leader must be able to think creatively. This kind of thinking places our priorities right.
7. The leader must be intelligent to know and understand systems, structures, and processes. It has been said that intelligent leaders see beyond the ordinary eyes and move their people forward.
8. The leader must possess the ability to create a culture of excellence.
9. The leader must practice consistent discipline which will enable him to delivers results.
10. Accountability and a sense of good judgment.
Conclusions
The list above is not exhaustive meaning you can add to the list. I have not written about soft skills that a leader needs. Skills like interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, etc. you can add to the list.
Where We Always Miss It!
We don’t check whether or not those who desire to represent us have these skills. We assume they have these skills and often we dress and color them with these skills because they are generous. Being generous doesn’t make one a leader.
Getting it right!
We must begin to look for these skills in the lives of the people currently coming to us seeking our support to represent us.
This is SDK with the Value-Based No Excuse Leadership Perspective.
